The great discovery is that the Bible is a message system: it's not simply 66 books penned by 40 authors over thousands of years, the Bible is an integrated whole which bears evidence of supernatural engineering in every detail!
Author: Moses (Deut. 1:1, 29:1, 31:9,24-26). A few editorial additions, such as the story of Moses' death (32:48-52) and burial (ch. 34) were probably written by Joshua. Otherwise, the tone and character of the book, its style and method are as from a single writer. Old Testament allusions testify that Moses was the author (Josh. 8:31; 2 Kings 14:6; 2 Chr. 23:18; 25:4; 34:14; Ezra 3:2; 7:6; Neh. 8:1; Dan.9:11,13). Jesus also confirmed Moses' authorship of the books attributed to him (Mark 10:3,4; John 5:46,47).
Date: 2nd millennium B.C., in the plains of Moab just prior to the Israelites' entrance into the Promised Land.
The fifth and final book of the Pentateuch, Deuteronomy acts as a recapitulation of the Law that God had given the Israelites at Mt. Sinai. The Hebrew name of the book is 'Elle haddabharim' - "These are the words" - after the first words of Deut 1:1. It is called "The Second Law" - 'Deuteronomion' - by the Greeks, hence the English name "Deuteronomy." The book contains the last discourses given in the plains of Moab by Moses before he died. They are the last loving and stern warnings of a leader to the people he has led for 40 odd years, knowing they would face many temptations as they conquered the land God had promised them - the land God had promised Abraham, Isaac, and Israel (Gen 17:8, 48:3,4).
